I like to try to get the best level ups I can.
Unfortunately I've managed to lose my book.
Can anyone tell me what hp bonus the various cons give?

I checked Six's site, and the only place it's mentioned is that
15 gives +1 to the roll at lvl up.
Does this mean that 16 gives 2, 17/3, etc?

15=+1hp/lvl
16=+2hp/lvl
17=+3hp/lvl to Fighters/Rangers/Paladins ONLY (as well as any multiclass combo involving these classes) +2 to everyone else
18=+4hp/lvl (+2 to non-warriors)
19=+5hp/lvl (+2 to non-warriors) (+1 to save vs. poison)
20=+5hp/lvl (+2 to non-warriors) (regen 1hp/hour +1 save vs poison)
higher con grants increased regen and greater poison bonuses, and an increase of hp IIRC +1hp/3 points of con)

constitution HP bonuses only count for HD levels (1-9 for warriors/priests

1-10 for thieves/bards/mages)

Really? I don't know where you looked, but the full chart is in Appendix 1: Tables, or more specifically,
http://www.geocities.com/sixospades/bg/stats.htm

Morgeruat is mostly correct in his breakdown of CON benefits, but neglected to point out that only Dwarves and Halflings enjoy a better Save vs. Death for a high CON score. I don't know the exact numbers, but they're in one of the *.2DA files, somewhere....I'll have to add the specifics in the next edition of Volothamp's. Regeneration is as follows:

20 CON: 1 hp/6 rounds
21: 1 hp/5 rounds
22: 1 hp/4 rounds
23: 1 hp/3 rounds
24: 1 hp/2 rounds
25: 1 hp/round
Regeneration through Constitution is not cumulative: If you are under the effect of a spell, potion, or item that grants Regeneration, the computer ignores all Regen rates except the highest one. The only ways to stack Regeneration is to equip 2 or more items that grant the same Regen rate, or to take a Regenerating character and cast Improved Haste (BG2 spell) on it.

If 20 CON granted a Regen rate of 1 hp per hour, than Kagain would only regenerate 8 hitpoints per Rest. But it's actually a lot more: Usually, no matter how badly wounded he is, all you have to do is take a nap or travel to another map area & he's good as new. And Mages have 9 Hit Dice as well--only Rogues have 10. But your CON score still matters after you've gone past Level 9 or 10: If a Level 30 Fighter recieved some bonus that raised him from 18 CON to 19 CON, he would suddenly gain 9 new hitpoints--one for each level from 1 through 9.

Are the 2da's a text file, or do I need an editor to open them? If so, which editor is probably the most versatile that includes 2da viewing/editing?

2DA files are text, but most of them are contained with .bifs and unless you want to wade through megabytes of Binary garbage to find them, youll need to use something like Near Infinity.
