In the thieves' guild, one meets up with a "drunkard" called Husam (I think), who gives one various information and then says that he can be found in the Elvesong Tavern if one wants to know more.

Later in the game, one comes across him waiting in front of the "Blushing Mermaid". When one talks to him, six of his shadow thieves appear. He then tells one to get rid of the assassins in the undercellar, and gives one instructions on how to get there (by speaking to the priest in the shrine of Illmater).

On completion of that quest, he asks one whether one has found anything on the bodies, and on producing the letters, says that one should proceed to the duchal palace and show the invitation to be admitted, while he and his band of thieves will try and gain entrance through the sewers.

So, I was hoping that he and his thieves would show up and assist me in the fight there, but to my great disappointment, he did not show up, leaving me to fight alone (I'm soloing this time round).

What must I do to get him and his thieves to show up at the palace ?

I have never heard of Husam & Company being inside the Palace, and no, there is no entry via the sewers. The only way to have any allies inside the Palace (other than the FF) is by way of some Summoning or Charm spells.

Hmm I accidently killed him (we had a thieves guild spree ;) ) - will this be a problem for later? It wasn't like unprovoked; he was hostile when he came out of his room but now I'm thinking maybe he's supposed to be alive to trigger the invitation bit?

No, this shouldn't be a problem - I never met him in my game. You should find that several people will drop hints about the invitation. If all else fails just go to the undercellar. Good luck

Thanks for answering my question, Six! I'm glad to hear that it was not my fault that Husam & Co did not show up at the duchal palace. After re-reading the dialogue, I noticed that Husam says at the end that he is not sure whether they will be successful (in gaining entrance to the palace via the sewers), so I guess that they just did not make it.

As it turned out, I'm glad that they did not assist me in the fight there, as anyhow I had to hurry up to kill the you-know-whats before the guards killed them, because that would have meant losing the experience points. And those I wanted (and finally got) all for my solo PC!
