1. Grunaxe. You will be sent to find him in one (the second) Bushi Dojo quest.
2. The puzzle. Go around the levers and pull the chains until all of them (except the last one, which can be pulled only if all other chains are pulled) are pulled. The correct ordering of pulling is unknown to me but the "stubborn" method works. After 3 or 4 rounds, all chains will be pulled and you will be able to pull the last chain.

Wyvern has posted a walkthrough of the vault puzzle together with a map of the chains on page one of the best tips. However, she suggests that one should go through all the chains pulling them - and then, once that is done, one should go back and pull those that have gone up. But if one pulls all the chains without going back all the chains will have gone up again.

This sequence works every time: 2, 1, 3, 4, 3, 5, 6, 2, 1, 5, 7, 4, 3. (Wyvern's numbers).

Grunaxe gives you background information about S'keser Da and what's going on there. If you've already received the quest to find him, you should be complete now.

What I do for the chains...

Start at position 1 (facing the portcullis, left side). Pull them all down (all except position 8, that is, which resets it).

Go left-to-right for the first step.

Then, starting at chain 7, go back (right to left) and pull down any chains which went back up.

When you get to position 1, go back again (left to right) pulling down any that went up.

Repeat until all chains are down (which doesn't take long). When all are down, pull chain 8.

That is odd. I have found that if one goes through all chains once (not pulling the eighth) they will all have reset each other. Instead one should go back and pull the ones that go up immediately when they go up (the sequence I have posted).

Hmmm... must be the starting position. There is one chain which either resets them all or opens the portcullis. If you go back and forth as I described, eventually (and without taking too long) it's the only one up.

A specific pattern like you posted is probably better and faster... only I can never remember what it is, so I have to go searching through my notes, so...

Ah, well. There are many ways to play the game, for sure :D

The beautiful thing is that brute force will solve all *necessary* puzzles within a minute -- for those of us who can never remember minutiae ;)
