There's a thread on the GD board... 3d0, parent to New World Computing, is filing chapter 11 bankruptcy and preparing to close up shop. Might and Magic, one of the first CRPGs, may officially be buried...

'Tis a sad day for me... MM1 was my first CRPG, and you never forget your first...

MM3 was one of my first RPGs,and it's a shame that the company has to close its gates. As it is right now, only Black Isle and Heuristic Park seem to stand for solid single player RPGs.

You know what they say "All good things must come to a end."

MM9, HOMM4 was the end. There were several other games in the series as well. A 3D adventure game which was OK, and an online RPG which I never played.

Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is definely far along in production and will certainly see the light of day. Ive seen lots of screen shots on the net.

Might and magic 10 is less likely I havent heard anything about that one.

I thought heroes of might and magic 4 was a travesty I give it about 2 out of 10. And they even made 2 expansions for it, a completely non functioning game with AI that moves around and random and doesnt build bast level 3.

Might and magic 9 I didnt finish but I thought it was ok. It was just so barren. I think people who like Wizards and warriors might like it though its similar in a lot of ways.

But no doubt they released a couple bad games likely they would lose some money...

M&Ms were not my first CRPGs but certainly games I played. I still have the handmade map I made of the first M&M where it always looked like you were standing between 4 cards with pictures of scenery on them! ;)

I dabbled with the later M&Ms (6, 7, & 8) but don't think I finished any of them. 6 crashed and was not recoverable (I started over 3 times from scratch and had the same thing happen each time - somewhere along the line the game saves became corrupted and there was no solution). I generally played until the game started getting sci-fi and settled for ArcoMage instead. ;)

Many of the CRPG companies have had difficulties but I can't believe that there isn't a market out there for these games. No doubt it is more complex to put together a CRPG than a Shooter. Seems like the long development time is the biggest cause for problems. The critics tend to rag thess companies if there is not a major improvement in the game engine. Sometimes I would be quite happy to have the existing engine if the game itself is creative and interesting. I'm not always a fan of new bells and whistles. Unfortunately it seems when they do use the same engine to get a new game out more quickly, they don't do enough with the plot. M&M 7 and 8 weren't significantly different than 6. I didn't even bother with M&M 9.
