Its my second attempt at BG. So after clearing all of the wilderness areas south of BG we infiltrated the bandit camp and nervously entered the leaders’ tent. Two very simple minutes later they were all lying dead and we were looting the chests. “Hmm”, I thought, “that was easy” (party of 5 with a fair bit of XP mind).

I went to Cloakwood and picked up Coran and recovered Gurke’s cloak. “Let’s just nip this cloak back to Beregost”, I said, “and we’ll see if we can find you some nice armour while we’re there”. Back to Cloakwood I now have a really rather good scout (shadow armour and boots of stealth giving about 150%) but he’s not needed in the forest. Spiders are easy – wyverns aren’t hard – Boo, apparently, is having a whale of a time and so, we make our way to the mines.

Coran scouts forward and reports back that we have to get past two pretty solid looking fighters and two mages. We form up out of sight, allocate targets, buff and charge. It works and we have boots of speed. Minsc decides that they will help in to rush to battle and who are we to argue.

The mines are going well – Coran sneaking, Imoen checking for traps and Minsc always ready to ruuuush to battle. I can’t remember where we were now – a fair way in probably – we’d found some secret doors and traveled though. Coran had opened one and before he could hide again a guard had spotted him – Minsc charged at the guard in the other doorway and chopped him down when over his shoulder he heard the sound of a mage spell being cast. Turning into what appeared to be a banqueting hall of some kind Minsc sees the mage has a little help in the form of about a dozen guards and archers. If Minsc has learned anything though it’s that you don’t leave mages standing around if you can help it so he charges her. Minsc isn’t the most thoughtful of warriors but six arrows biting though his armour are hard to ignore and he wonders for a second whether it was worth giving up his boots of avoidance for the sake of running faster but its too late to worry about and the mage is gone now anyway. The problem is that all the guards are still attacking him, his companions have caught up but they’re bunched in the doorway and can’t join the battle or even target the archers . . . . .

Enough story – but I reckon this was the best battle so far – difficult starting position unable to employ the one-enemy-at-a-time-missile-volley, no area-of-effect spells, nothing. Just battling away, healing on the fly, trying to get someone through to the back of the hall to change the angles a bit (my druid managed to get line of sight to summon a pack of wolves in behind them which helped a lot).

Blitzing though like a well-oiled killing machine is nice in a way but its very entertaining when things go wrong
