I'm into my first game, and I just entered Baldur's Gate. (So far I've explored about screens). Man, chapter 4 was really short! Anyways, I'm not sure what all to do here, so any help would be greatly appreciative (eg. when to go down to sewers). BTW, I'm roleplaying a Paladin. (No spoilers please.)

Walk around, do some quests, barge into some random houses, get some nifty items. If you just want to advance the plot than follow the directions of the Flaming Fist soldier on the bridge and go see Scar in the Flaming Fist compound in the SW of the city.

1) Try to do quests in the order you got them, making exceptions if something seems really urgent.
2) Use your Journal to keep from going insane.
3) Scar is a Good-aligned officer of the peace with the welfare of the citizens as his top priority. His slightest whim is, to you, as the sternest command.
4) If someone tells you that you've been poisoned, for Torm's sake, BELIEVE THEM.
5) Once you've got all (or most) of the quests finished, start your own quest to root out Evil wherever it may be hiding. Search BG city from top to bottom: Enter every building, and if it's nothing more than innocent Commoners, apologize for the intrusion and leave. If the inhabitants act suspicious, however, investigate as thoroughly as the situation would seem to warrant.

thanks alot!as far as the poison thing, i was aware that it would happen (often ignore spoiler warnings), but what should i do about the necromancers? they both give me quests, but the priest said to keep my distance. maybe i'll start destroying the evil with them...

Honestly my friend, don't worry so much about finding every item, meeting every person, or discovering every side quest on your first time through the game. This wil be the third party that I have played with in BG and TotSC, and I have yet to beat the game, or finish every possible endeavor. I guess it is because I simply do not want the GREATEST game even made, to come to an end!
The point that I'm trying to make here is that, it really isn't a BAD thing to not find or discover everything that can be discovered, be it in the Gate or elsewhere. This is for the obvious reason of - replayability, that is if you are anything like the rest of us Goofballs who simply can't stop playing this darned little game!
My only specific advice regarding the City of Baldur's Gate is.... good luck and have fun!

These necromancers... Do you mean Arkion and Nemphre? If so, what Ordulinian (the priest) said was just a peaceful advice. He obviously knows them very well. Will you do the quests or not is entirely up to you. Though, they are both evil so you might not want to do them as you're roleplaying paladin.

As for sewers, you'll get a quest to go down there (actually 2 quests, but nevermind) so that's a good time to search them thoroughly (although there's not too much down there).

On the contrary, you wouldn't believe how much crap I found in the sewers.... :)

Sorry. Just felt like the moment was right for a bad joke.

Not necessarily. The Poison quest can only be triggered by going to a certain general location (which isn't a very popular spot--none of the normal BG quests require you to go there), and if you should never happen to stumble into that section of town and have a chat with a couple of guys, the Poison quest will never be initiated.

But it's still there, waiting......juuuuust waaaiiiiting.....heh heh heh.....
