played about with a new halfling cleric solo last night and it was very entertaining - the 2 early game secret caches (ROW & APM) are very useful - especially if you know you'll never need the first one - ker-ching

he's pretty good with a sling and less good with a morning star but given his AC from the above item and cash he can stand swinging away at hobgoblins and the like until he eventually connects - one attack a round is getting a bit time consuming though, its a real shame that you can't make a halfling fighter/cleric :(

ranger/cleric would be asking a bit too much though . . . .

If you do some heavy scouting of the early maps, you can find little gem caches. You can even find a diamond in the crook of a tree. Can you say, set for Chapter 2? ;)

The dough will come rolling in soon enough. Not only are you soloing but you're soloing as a class that can't use slashing or piercing weapons. Lots of potential selling material.

Use all that cash you won't be spending on gear to buy potions. Good things to look out for include:
</font>
 • potions of power (it's like the potion of heroism but can be used by any class)</font>
 • potions of regeneration</font>
 • potions of strength/agility/fortitude (depends on STR/DEX/CON being below 18, because those potions will set it to 18, respectively)</font>
 • potions of absorption (for those lightning-slinging traps and mages)</font>
 • potions of magic blocking (won't harm you since you can't cast mage spells)</font>
 • potions of magic shielding (you can make all your saving throws!)</font>
 • potions of mind focusing (in case you need the +3 dex bonus)</font>
 • potions of stone form (sets your base AC to 0, useful early game)</font>
 • red potion/potion of genius (this is a last resort, but you can use the red potion to give you phenomenal strength and dexterity and use a potion of genius to raise your intelligence a bit)</font>
ranger/cleric would be asking a bit too much though . . . .
I find the ranger/cleric useful only for the druid and cleric spells. Druids gain their potent arsenal in BG2; you're better off just being a cleric.
