For some reason I am unable to get Talrik to take the longtooth hide from me, so I can't get the treasure map. Am I missing something obvious?

Talrik's personal inventory may be full. Try trading with him to open one of his slots and then attempt to give him the hide again.

:D - it's a good bet your 6 characters all gave him a hook to complete a previous quest - that's more than likely why his inventory is full and he don't want the hide. Plan H is pick his pocket first.
