I'm still trying to get through to Kreug's study and the library, and I've made it to the main room with the big head where one is supposed to summon the spirit, but I can't seem to get through the gate on the right, when one is facing the large serpent head.

Turn around and flick BOTH the switches in the alcove behind you. That should open both gates.

Right... stupid me. And even more stupidly, I've killed Xydussa before picking up the quest in Ishad N'ha. That's not fatal is it?

Naw...just means you missed out on 1000 XP and a guild promotion from the Temple. You can make that up later.
