Is there any penalty for dying other than having to pay a lot for resurrection?

Nope. I think your Fortitude may decrease by 1, but you can increase it again at your next level up. So no permanent damage.

Best thing, though, is to reload and try the battle again...at least until you get a character who can cast "Resurrect" (5th level Spirit spell). Otherwise it's going to be VERY costly.
