Any suggestions for which of this to pull or not?? These are the types of "puzzles" that drive me nuts - is there something I am supposed to stumble across for clues or just experiment?

I found this very helpfull when I was tring teh same puzzel, its from Rick Vord. walkthrough,
starting with the pull chains nearest the locked grate and working north. Pulling some chains down raises others so keep looking around to see the effects of your actions. The last pull is on the north side of the southeast pillar.

Try your luck at experimentation. There is a pattern to the pull order. If you don't figure it out, the solution is in the Best Tips thread on this board.
