I just started playing Wizards and Warriors a couple of weeks ago. I haven't played the Wizardry games but if they are like this one, they must be pretty good.

Will lock picks work on any locks (given sufficient skill level) or do you have to have a specific key for certain ones?

There are some locks you can only open with a special key. You will know when the char you set to open it will say 'Something is needed.' And if your char is trained in Lockpick you can open locks without having a lockpick equipped; so if your char changes to a class that isn't allowed to equip lockpicks, his skill is not lost. Lockpicks just give a bonus to the skill according to their level (lvl 1 lockpick = skill lvl + 1, ...... lvl 4 lockpick = skill lvl +4).

Thanks for the welcome. I've seen the "Something is needed" message a few times so far.
