i killed raskalion and found grundel..then i talked to scanthril about 'payment' and he told me to go to the north side of the woods..(i guess that is the boogre prison) i visited it but found nothing...and the little rat scum gave me nothing

You should receive the dagger directly from Scanthril, maybe you haven´t asked the right question. What I did is kill that mean rat - the dagger was one of his weapons and you get some additional experience points.

Killing him gets you a good dagger (magic + something) but not the assassins dagger - you only get that voluntarily from Scanthril - you can invoke the dagger for the Deathstrike trait, and it is one of (I think THE) best enchantable weapons in the game. Don't kill him - insist on getting payment or reward.
