On a German URL I found this cheat:

Ebenfalls vor den Stadtmauern sollte "Toughen" angewendet werden, entweder als Spruch oder Trank. Wenn man dann die Stadt betritt, werden die zusätzlichen Hitpoints permanent, d.h. man kann sich die Probiererei bei der Levelsteigerung sparen.
Allerdings soll jetzt ein Patch erhältlich sein, mit dem das nicht mehr gehen soll. Hmm...

Translation:

In front of the city walls you should use "toughen" as well, even as spell or by potion. If you enter the city then the getting hitpoints will become permanent, that means you can spare the (lots of) level-up tries.
But, after the patch it doesn't work no more.

I think it only works in the UNpatched version. Know it works on my game which is unpatched. Anyone try this on the patched version??

It won't work on the patched version. They made it so all status effects (I think all of them anyway) disappear upon entering a town due to "some" status effects becoming permanent.
