Is it possible to change from a role and then back again? For example
ninja->bard->ninja
If so does the level of the role get reset to 1 then second time around or is it kept as it was?

Not within "one" game. The only way to go back to a previous class is to reset the adventures and start the game over. When the game is reset, it only keeps track of what class your characters start as and not those from your previous game.

maybe we should clarify it more about roles....
take this for example:

Let's say one was 9th level priest (deep regret) immediately changed role to a 15th level monk. Perhaps after succeeding reaching the 17th or 18th level, I want to change the role to Warlock or a Ranger.
Question: will it eliminate your spells, skills, and/or your chances for the role of the Zenmaster?

Nope. Any class can become a Zenmaster, even a Rogue. All you have to have is the 4 tomes in your inventory when you visit the Bushi Guild.
