The second time I passed by the old burned out house Scanthril said I had betrayed him (what did I DO??) and tried to kill me. Naturally I opened a can of rodent-be-gone on him and he's deader than the proverbial doornail. Now it sounds like I need him later in the game. Do I??

Not really. You need him (mostly) to get to be an assasin, other than that, he just gives you a couple side-quest jobs.

If you somehow missed getting the assassin quest or "payment" for completion of it, and you want an assassin in your party, talk to Wyv. ; )
