Once you arrive at the circle room you need not have to use the sticks to exit! Wether you exit left (which allows you to fight the cyclops for the lamp which is a quest item) or exit right (to leave the wretched caves) try backing up against the opposite wall and run forward (shift key) once you reach the wall in front of you hit jump (the "0" key on your number pad)while looking up! You will be out of the pit! It might take a few tries but sure beats trying to figure out the puzzle!
