This is my first acually rpg game (unless you count Diablo 2 witch has no Die rolls) so what is the best roll you can get for starting a character (how many Die and hom many sides to each die)

Well, it really depends on what class your character is, because the classes have different minimums for different traits, and some have higher minimums than others. A Paladin or Ranger for example, would get a fairly high die roll on a good try. For Generally, anywhere in the 80's is pretty good, 90's would take you a lot longer time, although there are those who roll for hours to get that 95 ;) .

Just remember to distribute your roll accordingly for your class and don't do something like give your mage an intelligence of 9, but a strength of 15 :D .

80s are good, really, if you have an 80, it's all you need. If you plan on making a really good character through the whole trilogy, a 90 is good. I've rolled a 97 once, but your first time through you shouldn't spend 3-4 hours rolling dice.

It shoud be noted that it is inherently easier to roll a character in the high 80's low 90's (or even high 90's if the dice gods smile upon you) if you choose either a paladin or a ranger as your character type. This is because the basic minimums for these classes of characters are so high.

I just rolled a 95 on a bard, which is currently my highest total ever. The minimum 15 charisma helps keep your total up. And it took less than an hour to roll it up. Happy day

and to answer the original question, the stats are based on 3 rolls of a six sided die, max being 18 (although I think some races must get a +1 in certain categories) and minimum is 3 unless your selected class sets a higher minimum, in which case your roll is automatically boosted to that number.

Though people who are obsessed with high dice rolls should just gatekeep their high scores in. I can't see the difference between this and rolling for 3 hours.

Hell, you can even justify it by saying that given the storyline, you are bound to be far more powerful than every human or demihuman you meet. High scores are not that outrageous, I believe.

Too true, you don't need high stats to play the game, only thing it does is make it easier. If that's what you want (or need) then go for it. I'm usually looking to make things harder, so playing with bad stats is one way of doing this. You might also need high stats if you are role-playing and hence restricting you abilities in other ways.

I find running around the game with stats of 18(00) / 18 / 18 / 10 / 10 / 3 to be really boring, not to mention unrealistic. So what I do is I'll hit Reroll as many times as I want, but I won't use the (+) or (-) buttons to move my points around, so everything is a natural roll. (Although I will move points for roleplay purposes; Grint is a Half-Orc Barbarian, whose original stats were 16 / 17 / 18 / 5 / 10 / 14. I averaged out his INT and CHA, because not even a Barbarian could grow up in Candlekeep and still walk out with only 5 INT, and who'd believe a Half-Orc with 15 CHA?

you can rp the roll for a nice challenge and well balanced characters but i dont care if your 25 across the board durlags tower is still a challenge whatever party or stats you bring into it, whats so great about the tower is equipment and stats wont get you through it but good tactics will, makes the sword coast expansion worthwhile cos theres nothing else like it in pure bg1 killing sarevok is easy cos its just a straight fight, im definately a fan of durlags
