anyone know how to capture the leprechaun besides trying to chase him down? thanks

I tried for hours to capture that lil green twerp. Tried to talk, steal, carry... everything. Eventually killed him (tricky task). After all that, come to find out you dont have to catch him at all. You bump into the freak again after you meet Kerah, beyond the Shrine. The Proof you seek is in one of his chests.

Really wonder why the game designers set this quest up in this manner. Seems so odd and misleading.
