What is the urn of old used for? Is there something I need to use or give to the urn of old for something to happen?

I'm not sure why they had targetable objects that you can do nothing with. The demonic figurine in Skull Castle, for one, drove me crazy trying to get it. I think I had every crate in that level piled up, climbing up to grab the thing when I finally figured out that it was useless. Oh, well, had some interesting encounters in the process...not to mention some good XP.
