I turned on the "show attack rolls" function just recently, and I found that no matter what, I'm always attacking at a penalty. I mean, I have my character, who is a fighter, with 18 dex, *** in bows, the composite longbow +1, and the bracers of archery, and the best my rolls ever get are XX - 1. What's with that?

well i just realised something, i got a thac0 of 4 so how comes i can take 3 hits to kill a kobold? surely a kobold has ac of at best 4 or so, therefore i should be only missing if i roll a 1 on a d20 so a 1 in 20 chance, to miss another time is 1/400 chance! and it happens alot, theres got to be other modifiers in play?

It seems that random number generators in computers are not really random. (At least that's what they taught me at college 1000 years ago)
I'm going to turn on my to hit rolls, and see what is happening on the machine.

random number generators are seeded and unable to be completely random , saying that they can duplicate its effects as good as you need especially for something as simple as a d20 roll, as thats part of the main game engine and some of the most important code in the game given the amount of fights the seed number generator should be extremly good, so i doubt its that, when i want anything over a 1 on a d20 i should get in 19/20 attempts, to fail twice or more ticks me off :(

Yah, it isn't really random but for all intensive purposes it is pretty darn close.

Although it is possible that it is just bad luck because even with true randomness there is possibility to continuously roll 1's. Has anybody besides me every played a dice game and on certain days its like I can't roll past a 2.

Oneof my regular opponents had a telekinetic little sister. Whenever she was in the room, I lost. Memorable oocasions include losing which I needed to roll *one* two or better on 6D6, and a wargame which I lost despite have firepower, positional and stategic advantages you woudnt believe.

Grungi, if you turn on your hit rolls youll see whats happening a little better. Kobolds are not that crap actualy, so it may just be that your underestimating them. Although thaco 4 should be enough to hit them regularly.

*snaps fingers*

OR - the visual hits. Your characters will go through the attack animations more often than they actualy attack, in order to make the game look more exciting. Unless you have a lot of attacks, thats probably whats happening to you.

Woah, i just noticed that I only recieve the -1 to thac0 when it's nighttime. Are there penalties for fighting at night? Like, ones that are compensated for when you have infravision.

Grungi 11-01-2002 05:58 AM

im damned unlucky i know that, i done the rolling 6 1's on 6d6 before when all i needed was a 3 or above but even so, the odds of this happening to me are obscenly high, if i can hit these kind of odds even winning lotteries should be easy

ie say 10 kobolds

thac0 4 guy so i should only be missing on 1 d20 i would say miss at least 10 times (and normally more)

ouch those are high odds, if my maths is correct: 10/10240000000000

so

1/1024000000000

erm shit, and this happens to me every fight so multiplying it still further, come on, bad luck!?! there have to be other modifiers at play otherwise im the unluckiest guy alive

Morgeruat 11-01-2002 09:57 AM

actually, regardless of what your thac0 is if you roll a 1 (5% chance) you critically miss, with a THAC0 of 4 you should only miss on a critical miss though, strange...

there are penalties for fighting at night, in bright moonlight it's -1 to hit, in starlight it's -2 to hit, in complete blackness it's -4 (these are reduced in PnP if you have blindfighting) these do not apply if you have infravision, as you can see nearly as well at night as during the day
