i didnt get the key from kol outside the temple. Was i supposed to get a key from him after i talk to him, and if so is it important (do i need it for something) or is it unimportant whether or not i get the key?

The key opens a room in which you find a statue of Kerah . . . I don't know that it is essential but really adds to the game storyline. There are also about 3-4 Ankhs in there and I had some nifty weapon.

Yes - if you go through the whole conversational bit with Kol he gives you a key. This key gives you access to a Statue of Kerah which is inside the Serpent Temple - Talking to the statue will give you some background information on the story and there is some treasure in the room which you can collect.
You can get by with skipping this whole thing and have no problem with the rest of the game.
Or you can restore before you met Kol and make sure you get the key.
