I am stuck and cannot get back to town at all. Any deas? Am I just lost and not finding the obvious route?

Well, gee - can you tell us a bit more about where you are?
Are you in the Lost Sea area (you talked to Anephas which opened the door near by allowing you to finally get to the Lost Sea area)?
You can get back to Brimloch Roon by either going back through Anephas' tomb or by casting CALL OF HOME if you happen to have that spell. Before doing so, it would be nice to also cast CREATE PORTAL and use TELEPORT to return to where you are now.

In other words, there is no physical route from that area to Brimloch, other than trudging through the Temple of Isis again...
