I dualed Imoen, but I may have been too late! Level 6 = 20'000 XP, but I now realize that a mage won't become level 6 until after 40'000 XP. I'm afraid of two things:
1) I will never achieve enough XP to gether thieving skills back.
2) If I do, it won't be until after I reach the XP limit?

Have I got a chance? Or have I wasted 20000+ XP?

There's some good news and bad news perivar. The good news is that it's eminently possible to dual Imoen at this level and have her regain her old abilities.

The bad news is that you need to achieve 60,000 XP for level 7.

It can be done, so don't worry.

I take it that you have TotSC installed? If not, I can see your problem. Then, the answer will be harder to gauge. If you have 20,000 XP (or there abouts) for Imoen as a thief, then you can just gain 60,000 more for level 7 as a mage and hit the XP level-limit around the 89,000 mark.

Lord Brass has summed it up very clearly and correctly. I studied the experience tables, reviewed the experience cap, and then dualed Imoen at level 5. If you think you may have "wasted 20,000 exp", you could go back to an old save if you still have it. Study those charts before doing anything rash. Good luck.
