I'm most interested in not missing out on some good spells, more than the bonus spells you actually get.
I remember in the Baldur's Gate games liking Conjurors the best, because they only missed out on Divination spells, but now they miss out on Evocation spells, and I'm a bit more hesitant to go that way. This character will take at least 20 levels of some Wizard class, and will be working in the same party as a Sorcerer. TIA |
What role do you expect this character to fill? Is it a summoner? A backup spellbomber? A melee demon? Strictly a melee support caster?
I honestly cannot remember the opposition schools right now, and I rarely take a specialist anyway. I vastly prefer the versatility of a wizard. Since you are planning to go to HoF with this character, make sure you can cast necromantic spells (Wail of the Banshee, Horrid Wilting). You probably also want to be able to cast from the conjuration school (summons) and from enchantment (affects will saves, Chaos, Mass Dominate). Assuming you want to be able to cast raw damage spells, you need access to Evocation as well. That doesn't leave much, if anything, on your list of options. If it's working in the same party as a sorcerer, pick Diviner. The loss of Conj. spells isn't that big of a deal, because of the fact you have a sorcerer. I would recomend having your sorcerer specialise in summoning. Treat him like a conjurer, in a way.

Focus on summons with a sorceror? I'd go the more conventional route and power up on the best spells of each level. A sorceror going to HoF will probably be more useful stocking up on GSF: Necromancy, Enchantment, and Evocation, and the corresponding spells. I could see taking a few summoning spells with a sorceror, but not more than 4-5.

I expect this character to be a backup to my main spellcaster: an Aasimar Paladin 1 or 2/Sorcerer X.
I will have my Sorcerer be a bomber mostly, and will "pick the best spells of each level" as Aerich said in his last post. This character will be a Drow (or maybe a Deep Gnome) Rogue 1 or 2/Specialist Wizard (Illusionist if a DG) X. I expect him to fill in the holes with spells my Sorcerer won't pick (things that aren't useful to a high level guy, like Sleep and Summon Monster I, I guess). |
Well, the best "fill in the holes" arcane spellcaster is a wizard. You probably risk missing out on a useful spell or two, no matter what specialist you choose.
