Hey how you all doin?

Ive just started playing BG1 again after finally finishing BG2 and i was just wondering what party members i should use,
At the moment i have-
Me- Paladin
Imoen
Kivan
Khalid
Jaheira - be quiet for one second please!

but i dont know who have as my sixth person. I was thinking a mage, Xan maybe...Any help?

Welcome to the boards.

The choice of magic users depends on what you're willing to sacrifice. If you dual Imoen to a mage, you could have an "ordinary" mage, but the others are all specialists. As such, they cannot use certain types of magic:

Edwin (LE) - Conjurer (cannot use divination)
Xan (LN) - Enchanter (cannot use invocation)
Xzar (CE) - Necromancer (cannot use illusion)
Dynaheir (LG) - Invoker (cannot use enchantment/charm or conjuration/summonation)
Quayle (CN) - Cleric/Illusionist (cannot use necromancy)

No of this is too debilitating on a party in BG, so it remains for you to decide what you'd like to play, and what you're willing to to give up. Also, you might want to consider their alignments apropos to your party.

quayle! thats it, i forgot him (you know when your trying to remember something but you cant but its right there)
thanks for the list, your right about the alignment so i might get dynaheir although i just love Xan's positive attitude!
If i got Xan would any of his abilities decrease or anything like moral? because im on my way to twenty for reputation.

Xan is unusual in that having a reputation so high normally makes Neutrals unhappy. However, this isn't a problem with Xan as he's unhappy all of the time! It probably reinforces his disposition, which should (in theory) make him happier.

It won't affect anything so don't worry. Of course, you may need help afterwards, but there ya go...

I have had experience with all of the mages that Lord Brass listed except Quayle. I have to say that they are all decent pickups and the only one that I really haven't clicked with would be Edwin.

Since you're playing with a paladin, your best chouces are Dynaheir, Quayle and Xan. Unfortunately Dynaheir'll want you to include Minsc as well, or she'll leave after a time. Quayle is unplayable because of his voice (really, he makes Jaheira sound like.. well, like something that isn't annoying at all), he is only a half-mage, and you'll have to wait until very late in the game before you can include him.
Which leaves Xan. Xan cannot learn web, or fireball, or lightning bolt, or... but he can cast them from scrolls and wands. Aside from that "slight" disadvantage, he's a great character as Xan comes equipped with a very useful enchanted dagger with glow-in-the-dark blade, and a wonderful attitude which is sure to influence morale ;)
No competition really, eh?

My parties have been:
Party 1
Me - Paladin
Ajantis
Kivan
Khalid (Jaheria just happened to die. Seriously. )
Imoen (Thief/Mage)
Yeslick

Party 2
Me - Paladin
Kivan
Minsc
Dynaheir
Imoen
Jet Layla (She only in DSOTSC)

Since you have a paladin also, keeping all good characters eliminates the complaining when you have a high rep.
