when you guys do this multi classing, do you do it after building the character upto a certain level in one class first and then later in another or do you alternate between class each time a level up happens. the reason i'm asking this is since it sys that certain classes once multi classed with certain other classes cannot gain the initial classes later.

It depends. If I want a Paladin of Helm/Cleric then I level one class first, then the other. If I want a Fighter/Mage, I level them equally, to have the least XP penalty if any(depends on race). It's all about common sense. And creativity ;)

I know, I am on here as much as I actually play the games, possibly more.
I usually level equally in the beginning, getting more of a variety in skills. For example, if I am making a fighter4/paladin, I would go with a level of fighter for lots of feats, then two levels of paladin for aura of courage, then some more in fighter, etc. Consider what levels certain classes gain their abilities, and level accordingly. @ BoB Don't you mean a paladin of Ilmater? Helm is the fighters... |
I deliberately said Paladin of Helm, so that you lose Paladin level-up ability if you dual to Cleric, just to illustrate my point.

Right, makes sense. Wait...
A :sputter: paladin of helm/fighter/cleric! GAH! :furious reading over roleplaying post: Dang. Now I have to write "I will not powergame my head into the ground" 50 times. |
An 8/4/18 build even allows all the classes to reach their pinnacle of strength with Fiendslayer/Weapon Focus/9th level spells :D
I'm just tilting you Marty |
When you want to multiclass should really depend on what you need at the moment. For example, if I was building a Rogue 3/Fighter 4/Wizard X, I would level like so:
Rogue 1 (get uber skill points) Fighter 1 (gain access to all weapons plus extra feat plus extra hp) Fighter 2 (extra hp) Wizard 1-6 (to get 3rd level spells) Then take the rest as needed, just be sure that Rogue and Fighter are within one level of each other. |
Jeez BoB, the sig says DO NOT TEMPT!
Vassago, nice build. I should try that sometime, maybe with an elf. Or a drow! A drow paladi... NO! MUST NOT POWERGAME! Ok, I'm fine again. Breathe Marty, breathe. |
If I multi class a drow female as a fighter rogue, can anyone explain if it her favoured class (cleric) gives me a penalty?
