is there more to do/get in the Fell Wood than just what drives the plot? (getting the horn, the wisps) if so, is it worth the headache? its always seemed like too complex of a mess not to have something hidden in there.

Other than returning the fell wood dead to the elder at the Wandering village, nothing. Its just a big headache.

Marty4 is right. You get a bunch of xp and a couple of hidden goodies (nothing great though) and that's it. Unfortunately you HAVE to go through the place.
