I've destroyed all three pillars at the dam...now I can't get past the broken bridge? Where might I find lumber for this purpose?!

just walk to the far left hand side of the whole screen and you'll leave that area.

When you destroy the leftmost support, one party member automatically gets a piece of wood for the broken bridge. Check everyone's inventory and you should see it. Then just walk to the break and click on it; it should be fixed automatically and you can proceed.
