my sorceror can cast his spells. i have burning hands and magic missile and it seems the icon for both is in dark gray and looks disabled. fortunately he can cast spells from scrolls. is this a bug or is there anything i should do to enable it? please help

Those are both first level spells. Have you cast your limit for those? If so, they still show up as an option, but are greyed out.

What is his Charisma score? For Sorcerers it needs to be at least a 10 + the level of the spell for him to be able to cast it. So if it's under an 11 that would explain it. You really want to start a sorcerer with an 18 in Cha.

Yup... that would do it as well.

You also would want to look at what kind of armour your wizards is wearing.
This is because you cant cast spells when you are wearing armour. But you can if you are wearing the light stuff like bracers of defense and robes and cloaks or an armour that specifically allows you to wear the armour and cast spells with no penalty. Good Luck....

This would be true for 2E rules but IWD II is based on 3E rules. You can still equipped your sorcerer with a plate mail even she only has armor proficienct of 1 but she will have penalties on her actions and as well as casting spells (but she is still able to casts spells).

Every type of armor has an "arcane spell faliure %" associated with it, whatever that is is the percent chance a spell would fail when wearing that armor. But the choice to cast the spell would not be greyed out, you could still try to cast the spell, even in full plate mail. There's also the armored arcana feat that lets you reduce armor's spell failure percentage, I think it goes down by 5% per time you take the feat.
