Has anyone got this stupid spell to work against a bad guy who had improved invisibility, and if not what's the point...same for see invisible.

Maybe you mean that wizard prisoner in the Dragon's Eye jail? The very first
thing he does is cast non-detection. That skunks any "show" spell like See
Invisibility or Invis Purge and the like. So yeah, those spells are really
useless. I never used them myself.

All you can try against this is to hit the mage enough so he can't get the
invis off. Also, I tried Dispell Magic, and that didn't help, either.
