i have just started playing and i have chosen in my group a sorcerer.
well the thing is that i am not sure what is the advantage of having it instead of a wizard. i have played NWN, so i am familiar with 3rd edition AD&D, but i played with a fighter-wizard so i dunno nothing about sorcerers. for example in ID2, i start with the sorcerer and i have 4 spells but i donīt even know if i am able to change the spells. i have 2, identify and color spray, and when in the records scroll i see i have four slots full with color spray, but i cannot change one of the slots for using identify (may be i cannot).so if someone could please tell me if the sorcerer is worth for anything or not, it would help me a lot. |
As far as sorcerers, their spells are based on their charisma. You get to pick only a certain amount of spells per level and cannot scribe scrolls like a wizard, but instead of having to preselect from all your spells which spells you memorize then having to rest to gain them, you can cast any spell from your list as many times as you have spells available. so say at lvl 1 you pick magic missile and sleep, and can cast 4 spells. you could possible cast 4 MM, 4 sleep... or 2 sleep and 2 MM... or any combination of your 2 spells, up to 4 times. Confuse you more or help?

If this is your first time through the game I would probably go with a general Wizard as your main spellcaster. They can scribe all the scrolls you find and are probably easier to use if you don't know the inns and outs of every spell in the game. The pitfall with Sorcerors is that you only get a very limited selection of spells for each level, I think the maximum you can know for each level is six so if you pick unwisley you can really gimp you character. Still if you need advice on what spells to pick for a Sorceror post here and there will be many people willing to put in their two cents on spell choices.

My sorcerer is now level 11 (I'm in chapter III) and he is on the 3rd place in my party by the number of kills with 15%. I personally don't like wizards. Sorcerer in my opinion is better than wizard. Indeed he doesn't know many spells but he can cast more spells that wizard. The trick in to chose only the most effective spells. If you want some advice please ask and I will try to help you.
