I went to the Nashkel store and tried to steal some Expensive Plate armor with Imoen (after all she IS a theif) but every time I do it the storekeeper turns on me! How do you steal successfully? The only probability that I see that could be related is pickpoketing (it's at 25% for her).
Heh, are you all tired of me asking so many questions (er...know where a good guide might be so I don't have to bother you all? |
By the time you are able to steal at a decent rate from shopkeeps, you won't need to. The way some people do it is to quikcsave using the q key right before they picpocket and then reload until they are succsessful.

n00body, why would we get tired of the questions.
1) that is why this forum exists. 2) what am I going to do with all my free time if somebody doesn't need questions answered about games I know. |
Wilbur is correct, n00body.
The best thing to do is to QuickSave your game (by pressing Q) right before attempting to steal. YOU are correct that Imoen only has a 25% chance of success. If she fails, the storekeep will become hostile. If you have enough patience with re-loading...you will eventually get what you want. BTW, that's one reason I'm planning on keeping Montaran(sp?) a little longer this time. In addition to being evil, he has a 35% chance to pick pockets. However, once you go "wolf hunting" after the Nashkell Mines, you shouldn't be having too many more money problems. |
You can temporarily enhance Imoen's pickpocketing skills by drinking a potion of master thievery. But I wouldn't know if that raises her pick pocketng stats enough so that she gets a decent chance of success.

I screwed stealin. After the first few attempts, i realized it was hopeless.

During the few times that I attempted to steal from a merchant, I noticed that I couldn't successfully do it without the rest of my party standing alongside my thief (Imoen). Now maybe this was simply coincidentle, but as far as I remember, it sure seemed to be a deciding factor. But I'm not sure if there is any substance to my claim. Anyone notice this sort of thing as well?

well i always stole alone, i stole loads at the beginning of the game :D , plate mail for my fighter, swords, them +1 large shields :D

So, Gigaettin, how did you manage to steal so much at low levels and percentages without having to deal with angry shop owners, angry town folks, and angry gurdsman? One thing that I think makes BG1 VERY weak is that you can be in a home and no one is around and you take from some closet or chest, sometimes having to force open a chest, etc., when suddenly Flaming Fist guards arrive out of nowhere. Perhaps they have a 24 hour Clarvoyance network.
