Can someone explain the summoning limit in IWD to me?
While in the Dragon's Eye my cleric tried to Animate Dead but I got the message "summoning limit reached". (OK this was the third or fourth time in a row he cast the spell) My mage then tried Monster Summoning I - "summoning limit reached" message again. The bard tried the Horn of Vahalla - same message. I retreated the party and rested them for 24 hours. I tried to summon undead again but got the same message again. Aaaargh! I uninstalled the game to make some room on my hard disk. A few days later I reinstalled the game and loaded a save game. Summoning was back to normal... What is the limit that a spellcaster can summon? Does that limit affect other spellcasters in the party? Does the limit reset after sleeping/moving to another area/saving-reloading? Thanks for any advice... |
Have you patched your game? There is a bug where if you do not witness your summons die/unsummon, and leave the area, they will still count towards your total.
The limit is 6. Personally, I never encountered this bug, but others have. |
No, it is not patched.
The limit of 6 - is that per caster or per party? |
Yep; most definitely a bug. Even when fully patched with Trials of the Luremaster, you will still get it. It is somewhat rare. It probably is based on one of the following:
1. Memory Leak (when you have been playing a long time--it's good to save and reboot the 'puter). 2. Operating System and patch levels. 3. Video card and patch levels--as well as a number of associated things such as settings and version of DirectX. 4. Amount of system memory and virtual memory settings. Etc. If you want absolute proof, just use the spell: Contact Other Plane. The Spirits add up but your summon count doesn't go away when they do! Bottom line: you can summon any six (6), but the bug might rear its ugly head. |
More like a hiccup on the .bcs file really. As I said, I never had this problem before. I can happily summon skeletons in location A, sleep in location B for 16 hours and the skeletons will be considered unsummoned.
It is 6 per party. |
So much for trying to raise my own private army... *sigh*
Thanks for the information everyone Javan |
