Hi, I am a newbie and I have a major problem with my game. I have windows xp. I have been playing the game just fine until I got on the second level in dragons eye. My game then does one of the following 2 things, it either crashes( screen goes blank), or it freezes. Any suggestions on how I might fix this? Thank you.

Do you have HOW? Did you go to the website and install the patches? That is very important.

Windtalker 02-02-2004 10:04 AM

Yes, I have HOW. All the patches that I have come across said not to download if you have HOW. Is there a patch that I can download that is compatable with HOW?

There are at least two patches for HoW, one of which is TotLM. The best thing I can suggest is to download Trials of the Luremaster (TotLM), which is a free official expansion AND complete patch to IWD/HoW, for HoW owners only.

Well, I have tried both patches and I am still having the same problems. It's getting frustrating. I don't know what else to do. I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling and nothing changed. Anyone else have any ideas before I completely quit playing? Thanks.

I have a ? What does my resolution need to be on and would that make a difference? Grasping at straws here.

Try this.

1) Uninstall the game via the Add/Remove Programs panel
2) Manually delete the leftover folders (optional, backup your mpsave folder)
3) Install IWD
4) Install HoW
5) Install TotL

Dundee,
Thanks for the advice . I followed it exactly like you said but it still crashes.

<font color = mediumspringgreen>Windtalker,

Bummer. I have XP and have not experienced this problem, nor heard of anyone who has.

O.K., this is either hardware, software or a compatibility issue. Here are the kinds of things I would try:

1.) Try your previous suggestion (since it is so easy) of testing different screen resolutions. Remember to try DE2 immedately after the change AND, if that doen't work, reboot the computer and try again without changing settings. If that doesn't work.....

2.) Reinstall using a friend's original IWD and HoW CDs. Re-download and then re-install TotLM. If problem still exists, then it is probably not a bad image of SW.

3.) Try playing a friend's saved game from the beginning of DE2. (You can find friends on this forum who will send you such saved games, if there is no one handy around your town.) If that works, then import your characters into that game and continue on. If that doesn't work, try playing a friend's saved game from DE3. If that works, then import your characters into that game, read a walkthrough to see what you missed, and download Dalekeeper to hack the missed expo into your characters and carry on.

4.) If you've made it this far in your trouble-shooting, then I don't know what to say, since this really sounds like a corrupted save or a SW problem (game bug or bad SW image); not a hardware or compatibility problem (since you have progressed so far in the game without problems). Is your system virus and spyware free? What is your party make-up? Are you running any custom game mods or scripts (Oh, yes: turn party AI off)? What are the specs on your machine (RAM, CPU speed, Video card model/specs and amount of video RAM, hard disk size and percent full)? When you actually crash in DE2, can you CNTL-ALT-DEL to get the Windows task manager? If so, under the "programs" tab, does it show IWD as "running" or "not responding;" and under the "processes" tab, is there a process (other than "system idle process") that seems to be hogging all the CPU resources (like over 50%)? Process name?

Maybe your CD is scratched or damaged?
