When you finish icewind dale(no expantion) after you kill the big demon and finish the cut scene and credits, does the game end there or do you return and talk to the townsfolk or something. My game kind of farted after the ending credits leading me to believe that something might happen and you go collect more loots.

The cut-scene after the final battle marks the end of the game. There is no opportunity to go back to Easthaven. You can, however use the same party you beat the game with to go through the expansion, Heart of Winter and the add-on to HOW, Trials of the Luremaster.
