This is bugging me.
Full install of IWD, HOW, Trials and the 1.41 patch.
everything is going fine. nice and fast. smooth. as it should with a XP1800+, 512mb of ram and windows2000.

but oneday i startup, no changes from previous startup, and the game is sluggish... well shot is a better description! so damn slow and jerky. its like its trying to render or calculate the position of 1000 other monsters...
and i dunno what it is.
ive tried the lowest graphic settings, with only minor improvment.
tried starting a new game, importing, the lot. doesnt matter who is in the party, or where it is, performance is VERY VERY bad. combat, scrolling, item manipulation in stat sheet.

HEEEEEEEEEEELP

Is the order you've listed above the order in which you installed things?

If you installed the 1.41 patch after installing TOL, that is quite possibly your problem. TOL itself acts as a more recent patch to HOW. Applying the 1.41 patch after TOL could leave you with a buggy and unstable installation.

nope. i worked that out.
my install was

IWD -> HOW -> patch 1.41 -> LM

got every setting set to minimum, and i just barely get a playable game :(
this aint happened before and ive ran the game for sometime now.

I had a similar problem with Adobe Photoshop before, the only fix was to uninstall, go into regedit and remove any traces, restart and then reinstall, if you back up your characters and save games you should be able to restore them when you reinstall.

Make a backup of the save game folder (using Windows Explorer), uninstall and re-install. Copy the backup folder over the top of the save game folder for the new installation. Should work.

ok, just thought of another possible cause, go into the directory where the game is installed, go into the cache folder and delete the contents. these are area files the game stores to lessen loading times, if you have too many of tehm it can slow things down, try it first, it could save you a reinstall.

MasterPooBaa,

It could also be related to some other software you installed recently, or (sigh) a virus. I would especially suspect the latter if you do a lot of surfing or like to download freeware/shareware.

Well i finally fixed the problem...
all it took was a reinstall of heart of winter, the patch and trials ontop.
some wierd ass crap going on.

my usually extreemly stable win2k OS also took a turn for the worse recently, getting laggy doing stuff, so maybe it was all related.
i think windows does it JUST to remind you that its a windows product! LOL

anyway... was a good opportunity to reinstall windows and download and install the latest via 4in1 drivers, video drivers and the monstrous service pack 3 for win2k.

now everything is peachy again
and i just love the "harder" patch i made to icewind dale ;)
just the right ballance somewhere between impossible mode and heart of fury
