The cap in IWD without the expansions is 1.8 million, but it's unlikely that you will reach that level without doing the old export/import trick, using an undersized party, hacking your characters, playing on a higher difficulty level or spending a LOT of time in monster spawning areas. Typical ending xp level for a party of 6 is more likely to be 1.2 million per character on normal difficulty.
