Talk to mage about his apprentice, kill everyhthing in all the caverns on that level, and on one of the monsters (think it's an ettin) you'll find the extract which you need to give to the mage for exp points.

I have tried differernt question and answer paths, all I can do is either kill him or trade with him. The subject of the apprentice must only come up the first time you talk to him. maybe????

so it would seem. the first time you talk to him. I found the apprentices'
body in a cave before I found the wizard.
