When ever I have the opportunity to level up it either gives me points for my thief and once in awhile a point for a weapon. Am I missing something, am I suppose to be getting points to distribute for skills(strength, dex, intell, etc)?
Thanks, Still Learning |
No in AD&D the six attributes are pretty much set from the beginning, you may be used to Might & Magic or Diablo. In AD&D finding an item to increase an attribute is a very rare thing indeed. On level up you get hit points and weapon proficiency as follows:
Hit Points Weapon Prof Mage 1-4, 1 after level 10 1 every 6 levels Thief,Bard 1-6, 2 after level 10 1 every 4 levels Cleric,Druid 1-8, 2 after level 9 1 every 4 levels Fighter,Pal,Ranger 1-10, 3 after level 9 1 every 3 levels If you have max hp per level turned on you always get the highest number, this is not AD&D rules in which you would roll and be bummed if you got a 1. Thieves also get 20 points per level to allocate to thier thieving skills. Rangers get stealth and bards pick pocket though I'm not sure of thier allocaion. Also your saving throws improve. I also believe your to hit improves by 1 for fighter types every time you level, and every other level for thieves and clerics and every third level for mages. Also fighters, pladins, ranger get another .5 attack at levels 7 & 13. And of course spell casters get more spells every time they level, and a new spell level every other time. |
Thanks for your reply. You mentioned "max hp turned on". This is the way I have it set now. Is it the best way or not?
Thank you in advance. |

Yes even I, an old school AD&D geek has max HP per level on, this game is tough enough I almost think the developers put it there intending you to use it, especially if you play above normal difficulty. I remember in the pen and paper days rolling 1 & 2 for my fighters HP was a real bummer.

In third edition d&d you do get a point every four levels for your attributes. Icewind Dale does not follow 2nd or 3rd edition that closely. Just about 85% of the stuff in the game is correct. That is cool though because I wouldn't want to know everything about the game.

don't forget THACO. i belive it goes
Fighters go down 1 every level Clerics go down 2 every 3rd level Rogues go down 1 every other level Mages go down 1 every 3rd level |
Magic users increase in combat ability (THACO to you lot) every five levels in fifth edition and every six in first. I can't remember what they used for IWD but I think it was 2nd Ed in which case Thieves increase every four levels.

IWD uses mostly 2nd edition rules. THACO is determined as per 2nd edition in IWD so the values i've previously posted are correct; rogues go down 1 every 2 levels and mages 1 every 3 levels
