I can't get past this place. My real problem is who on my team is what? It tells me who is who on the bad guys side, but where can I move who on my side?

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the position correspond roughly o a real game of chess. I found it easiest to move one person forward just far enough to lure the enemy pawns forward, then take themn down with missile fire, then try the same thing for their king

try not to move anyone forward! And you can start by lobbing a fireball or potion of explosions right into the upper middle of the chess board, then a few of the guys will rush you. Hold them off for a while until you can spot the king(use pause often) When you see the King hammer him with all your missle weapons, and magic missles until he gets down to where you are, then attack him with your melee fighters. It might take a while but if you focus just on him you will eventually get through the fight without losing anyone in your party.

make sure to check the bodies thoroughly, the 1st 2 times i went through the game i missed a powerful sword that is on the body of one of the fallen chess pieces.

Before you actually enter combat, lob some debilitating spells, like Sleep and Web. The last time I fought that chess game, I had those guys so Webbed up that 15 out of 16 of them died without ever moving. (One of the Knights managed to make his Saving Throws and went running around in a Morale Failure: Panic while we Fireballed the rest of the team into oblivion.)

The peices correspond exactly to a real chess game..sorry but this was my favorite part of DT. ;) I love chess. :D

Draw them out slowly. Don't try to take them on all at once, you'll be obliviated. ;)

I just use potions of explotion/fireball

Throw 6 of those - spaced evenly - only the king (and maybe one the rooks) survive - then use missiles to finifh off his majesty ;)
