I just started the game over with a new main character -FIGHTER/MAGE. Has anyone tried this?
He is half/elf with stats of 18/87-18-15-18-8-14. I've finished the 2 areas between Candlekeep and Friendly Arms as well as
Frendily Arms with no problem. I've used him mostly as an archer using armor spell and an occasional Magic Missle.

That's a good character to play, especially if you're thinking of importing it to SoA/ToB later (which I'd definitely recommend as they're both excellent games). The only small frustration is that it will take a long time to level up, especially in the later levels (6-8) and you might lag a little with regards to the rest of your party. I personally would've played a human fighter up to level 10, then dual-classed to a mage in SoA. But that's just me. Your character sounds fine

Good choice/it gives you a lot of options and you won't be so wek as if you were a fighter. And how did you get such a high roll?

You'll find that the Fighter/Mage is quite adequate for the way you're using him--Archer and occasional spellchucker--but you're going to find out that the combo becomes phenomenal once you hit SoA/ToB. I'm running an Elven Fighter/Mage (19/20/18/16/11/15) in BG2 now, and he's God. He's not high enough as a Fighter to get all his Saving Throws below zero, but he is SUCH a kickass Tank, because he can use his protection spells to get incredibly buff before a fight, then cast Tenser's Transformation (doubles your HP, boosts your AC, gives you the THAC0 of a Fighter of the same level, removes your spellcasting abilities), and then charge into the fray, knowing he's practically invincible.

(The disadvantage of Fighter dualed to Mage at Level 10 is that you lose out on the Saving Throws and THAC0 you would have earned if you went to Level 15 or 18, instead.)

Why'd you give him only 15 CON?

It took three evenings of trying to create a character to get these numbers. Its really no fun to
keep rolling numbers all night.

Oh, yeah, I just remembered another cool trick that only Multiclassed Fighter/Mages can do (provided they have ToB, of course): Greater Whirlwind during a TimeStop. Using the Answerer. Ouch.

Is a fighter/theif ne good for taking through to BG2, I have totsc as well, but not tob(yet)? I did it as ihave completed bg2 and could not find a good theif that could be used in a nuteral/evil party.

SixOfSpades 05-09-2002 10:05 PM

It's true: There are no Evil Thieves in BG2, and the supply of Thieves in general is very limited, so a Fighter/Thief is a very solid option.

(My Evil party got around the Thieving problem by using the Multiplayer trick to recreate Montaron.)

I'm a big fan of the Fighter/Mage combination, multi-class is good, dual-class is better. I find that a regular Mage is just a bit limited, so dualling from Fighter, or Cleric, makes the character a bit more robust and provides more attacking options. You can play as a fighter with extra magic ability or as a Mage with better equipment and more HP. I usually swap between normal armour or a robe (with magical defence), depending on the type of opposition, but above all I love to have a Mage with a decent Bow. My present game has a dual class Fighter/Mage, but because I am only doing BG1/TOTSC I dualled very early, at level 3, with three points in bow skills. This way I can develop the Mage skills earlier in the game, which suits my style of play.

Ted, hope you're having fun with the butt-kicking Mage - keep it up.

Awesomely good stats. And use all the tomes you get on him, and he'll be insanely good, that you'll make Drizzt jealous. It just takes some time though. MOre like all of TotSC and all of SoA
