I had one of my chars correctly step on each of the three key spots on the puzzle, got the message about the 12th click coming from the round table room, but the center did not open to the stairs. Is there something else I should do? Thanks for any help!

Yeah, when you do it, go back to the room with the big round table, and one of the statues will have a switch on it. Pull it and go back to the puzzle, the stairs will be there.
