Sometimes my Bard's spell availability comes up and is 'greyed' out. What causes this to happen?

It is grayed out because they are wearing armor. The only armor they can wear and cast in is elven chain (or bracers which don't really count). Just pause the game, take off the armor, cast a spell, then pause again and put the armor back on.
