I spoke with the Ice salamander king but did not ask about bodies on the floor. I then went and spoke with I think Garth down stairs. he asked me to kill king and get key. Now I can't find the king. What do I need to do?

He's there, but he's not labeled as such, Just look for salamanders in the general area and talk to them. You'll find him sooner or later.
