About me - i have played through BG2 but just started BG-1..
So i have a Cleric protaganist.
Early Spoiler ahead..

I got Xzar and Montarin early on then i complete this little book delivery quest and i get another Rep increase ( to 11 or 12)...

Then Jaheria and Khalid kill them!?! I wasnt that crazy about them anyway but... i had hoped to keep my rep at around 10 yet already i have gotten 3 or 4 rep increases! since it is still early into the game i might start over and not complete the Rep-increasing quests in candlekeep. Is there a way to decrease rep without going totally KOS (killed-on-sight) to the guards etc?
Does this mean i can't have evil NPCs in the party at all?
And How many times is a quest going to raise my Rep more, probably angering Jaheira herself, who being "NEUTRAL" should Not IMO have "judged" xzar as being TOO evil..(what she said when she attacked him. I mean come on that is not being NEUTRAL Bah !
Book delivery should not increase your rep to the general public
OR...Is her killing Xzar just part of the plot that happened to Coincide with my gaining one more rep point? Is this just something that happens?

Thx
Evergreene

No her killing Xzar is not normal early on. I had the both of them in my party for a bit and they never fought at all. As for rep I have an evil group in there and I keep it around 9 with np I let it run up to 17 then I go kill an innocent to bring it back down.

Possible spoiler and useless info await:
Jaheira and Khalid are Harpers. Xzar and Monty are Zhents. Harpers and Zhents have been vying 4 control over the region known as the Heartlands for years (the Zhents have been kept at bay by Elminster). The two couples spot each other's differences and fight. Ta-dah!

Ok.. i restarted a save game from JUST before i get that 12th rep point. Walking around, here VERY early in the game i am in that City south of the "friendly Arm Inn" whatever.. Jaheira attacked him AGAIN without me getting that 12th rep point! so i restarted the save game AGAIN , went ALL thru the town, this time with he and Montaron stripped of everything so i would not lose it and lo and behold- jaheira never attacks him! Grrr
I am ready to just kick him out anyway but i would like to get some other NPCs in soon-
HOW do you kill ONE innocent to lose just one rep point without the whole town wanting to kill you? I would like that...(Lanthir)
Oh and FYI what she says while she is attacking him; "You! You profess to fight evil while you yourself are *synonym for evil* ( forgot the exact term she uses)!"
The Circle under each of their feet turns Purple, and i lose control over them. J and K invariably kill X and M. Again, this is only chapter One. I did not do any harper or other faction quests yet.

Didn't need to. Once a harper, always a stinking, tree-hugging harper.

Your Charisma may also be a factor--higher Charisma means better leadership, so in-party fights (even seemingly unavoidable ones like the case in point) might concievably be held off for a LONG time. Who knows?

Evergreene 04-24-2002 11:54 AM

LOL that might really be a factor- CHA is not something i put points into and I think that character is at like 4 or 5 CHA, also Chaotic neutral which the game says is the hardest faction to play.. still odd.
I still want to know what people you can kill and take a point or two rep loss without the entire town turning on you..

thanks for the info

It's handy to play as a Paladin once or twice, and not only because of their high stat rolls: Free use of Detect Evil is quite nice. Start a new map, toss up a Detect Evil to see what kinds of stuff you'll be fighting. Also, it's very handy in letting you know whom you can whack: All beings of Evil alignment are usually safe to kill without losing reputation. Notice I said usually. The only ironclad rule seems to be that killing civilians (Peasant, Commoner, Nobleman/woman) will always damage your Rep, whether they have a unique name or not.
