Ive found my way, all of a sudden on the ship out to Spellhold and have now landed there

I did however want to look at a few "other" areas before heading out here

Is it possible to take the boat "back" to the mainland or do i now have to finish off the speelhold quests?

Nope--once you start Chapter 4, you're locked into it. You'll get back to Athkatla eventually, but not anytime soon. Don't worry, everything you left will be there when you get back, even if you were in the middle of quests.

You will be able to clean up all lose ends on the mainland before the game ends.

However, be warned- you were lucky to get a ship to the island in one place. I doubt you'll get anyone to take you there again, so make sure you do what you need to do before you take your leave.

there is an option for a teleport module if you really do want to get out of underdark..

The Underdark is horribly tedious…but it is an experience treasure trove
