Hi everyone, my first post
I'm a big fan of thieves, assassins and stalkers, basically backstabs in general. I thoroughly enjoyed the 'classic' threads (here and here) about the maximum damage capable of being inflicted by backstab, with a dualled Sarevok deathbringer assault backstab using the Staff of the Ram being the winner. But... I think I have found an even more damaging single attack (without mods). Jim came very close with this (updated for Sarevok): I think using the Equiliser in the off hand, whilst planting a critical quintuple grandmastery backstab whilst wearing the GoES/WE using Hindo's Doom +4 plus deathbringer assault will rival that of the SoTR+6! Assuming 25 STR Grandmastery with Katanas (patched) GoES/WE Hindos Doom +4 Equaliser (offhand) lawful good/evil or chaotic good/evil opponent Unarmed/missile equipped opponent.... Deathbringer assault (((((1D10+4)+5+2+6+4)*5)+14)*2)+200=538 damage! What he didn't take into account however is... Celestial Fury. While it does one point less basic damage than Hindos Doom +4 there is also a 5% chance of a Shocking Blow... an additional 20 points of electrical damage... You would need to be very lucky indeed getting a 3/100 deathbringer assault and a 1/20 shocking blow bonus to coincide, but it is possible! If your target has any hit points left (!!) then a failed save vs. spell (!!) will leave them stunned too! Bonus! Assuming 25 STR Grandmastery with Katanas (patched) GoES/WE Celestial Fury (+3) Equaliser (offhand) lawful good/evil or chaotic good/evil opponent Unarmed/missile equipped opponent.... Deathbringer assault Shocking Blow (((((1D10+3)+5+2+6+4)*5)+14)*2)+200+20=548 damage! And if you happen to have the item upgrade mod and Celestial Fury +5 you can add another 20 damage to that as well... |
Hi. Welcome to the forums!
There have been some new discoveries since those 2 threads. The thread here shows how it is possible to get a single damage of 810. New record to beat. |
Nice :D
That gives me an evil idea... I will try it this evening and see what happens... |
My evil idea works...
Here's a summary of the (previously!) highest damage recorded in a single hit: For an Assassin->Cleric(24->27) Assassin Bonus : +1 Iron Golem's Fist : +40 Improved Bard Song : +4 Cleric Aid : +1 Cleric Bless : +1 Tenser's Transformation : +2 GoESpecialisation : +2 Unarmed : +4 Maximum Total : 55 25 STR Damage Bonus : +14 Equaliser Damage Bonus : +6 Total Damage = [(55 * 7) + (14 + 6)] * 2 = 810dmg! ~~~~ ~~~~ My evil idea was to remember that Improved Bard Songs stack. Even more evil, so do Improved Bard Songs from Misleads. For an Assassin->Cleric(24->27) with 5 max level bard helpers. 1 bard helper has a ring of wizardry, giving 5 bards and 26 misleads. Assassin Bonus : +1 Iron Golem's Fist : +40 Improved Bard Song (+4*31) : +124 Cleric Aid : +1 Cleric Bless : +1 Tenser's Transformation : +2 GoESpecialisation : +2 Unarmed : +4 Maximum Total : 175 25 STR Damage Bonus : +14 Equaliser Damage Bonus : +6 Total Damage = [(175 * 7) + (14 + 6)] * 2 = 2490dmg!! :D Misleads hang around for 1 round/level, so if you really wanted to you could rush a bit and add some extra cheesiness with some spell traps (scroll and/or staff) and pre-prepared symbols and get even more clones... I've tested this for a bit on Sarevok, I've not managed a maximum damage critical yet, but I was quite happy with a 2406... :D |
Another idea:
5 chain contingencies (cast earlier from scrolls) each with 3 x Mislead. Maybe some project image scrolls? It's all good :D |
This is rediculous! I remember the days when I threw a 5 day party for doing 25 damage with a Longsword +1!
:D |
A real living dungeon master would never allow that.

I don't know, I quite like the idea of an assassin trying to sneak up on people while being followed by his/her adoring choir! ;)
It reminds me a bit of Monty Python's Holy Grail: Minstrel: [singing] Brave Sir Robin ran away... Sir Robin: *No!* Minstrel: [singing] bravely ran away away... Sir Robin: *I didn't!* Minstrel: [singing] When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled. Sir Robin: *I never did!* Minstrel: [singing] Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about, and valiantly, he chickened out. Sir Robin: *Oh, you liars!* Minstrel: [singing] Bravely taking to his feet, he beat a very brave retreat. A brave retreat by brave Sir Robin. |
Speaking of massive criticals I'm curious as to whether magic can critical? I was making my way through Firkraags lair today,when I decided to use Daystars Sunray ability in a room full of undead, and well to cut a long story short it wiped out the entire room, scoring 1042! damage on two of the unfortunate beasties, I was pretty amazed!
heres the screeny: http://static.filefront.com/images/p...hbmnxfjasg.jpg [ 03-10-2007, 04:08 AM: Message edited by: Daniel ] |
It's not a Critical Hit. That's just Sunray's method of ensuring that the Undead target dies.
