2)If I "let her down gently" (kill the romance, but keep her in the party), will the Harper subplots still unfold, all the way to her aquiring that great pin at the end?

1) If you have cheats installed, press control + i repeatedly, and it might initiate a conversation. Some of the romance conversations are plot-based though, so this won't always work.

2) The quest will not happen AFAIK.

I know she did get the pin when I played a half-orc and didn't romance her. I still chose the "good" dialogue options in the few dialogues I had with her.

It can be done. I once found a online guide on how to do it, but I'm afraid that don't have the link anymore.

From what I remember, it comes down to knowing what the triggers are and hitting them as quickly as possible. In some cases it requires a given action, like sleeping out of doors. Other events are real time based - I remember leving the game running while I went to watch a TV programe. When I returned I was onto the next lovetalk.

AFAIR, It is quite posible to have completed the romance before setting off for Spellhold. Then, with luck, the mystery gentleman will be there to greet you with your bonus on your return.
