BG1 and TOTSC came in a separate boxs. I have almost finished BG1, am in the thieves maze fighting skeletons. My question is, should I install TOTSC before I finish BG1 or will I be able to install it after I finish BG1.

You can install it anytime and it will upgrade your current saved games. I would recommend doing that because ToSC doesn't change the story ending. It adds new four areas that cannot be completed prior to the final battle anyway (win final battle = game over). It also upgrades your games to include new spells, items and weapons, improved stacking, and lets you know which items required IDing. The game is much better with the expansion. One of the new areas, Durlag's Tower, is nearly a small game in itself.

I would recommend you instal and play BG and TOTSC all at once. Personally I have never played BG alone but I am sure that it just wouldn't be the same exploring the world with just BG. If you have the expansion then I'd recommend you instal it right away unless you're planning to go through the game again once you've finished it.

the reason I play baldur's gate is the challenge of tough battles, and if you do finish the expansion quests you will be so strong that the final battle with Sarevok will be a joke, my advice is to make a separate save and continue on and beat the game, then go back to the save and exit the thieves maze and on to the expansion quests.

Not feasible from a roleplaying point of view but the gameplay is probably better that way, I agree.
